Lasers Should Be a Part of Gum Disease Treatment

When plaque builds up around the gumline, the bacteria lurking inside it can attack the sensitive gum tissue, leading to inflammation and infection. Taking time to brush twice a day (and floss at least once a day) works wonderfully for preventing gum disease before it starts, but once the disease progresses past the point of gingivitis and turns into periodontitis, more aggressive treatment measures may be required. The importance of lasers cannot be overlooked when considering effective methods to successfully treat gum disease. The Pros and Cons of Laser Gum Treatment Traditional methods of treating gum disease involved either scaling and planing or gum flap surgery. While they're both highly effective and safe, both can be quite invasive and uncomfortable to the patient. Often, they require full sedation, and recovery downtime can take weeks. Conversely, the benefits of laser treatment include: Lasers started garnering the attention of periodontists once we realized how valuable they are in successfully treating gum disease without a long list of adverse side effects. While lasers are generally regarded as safe, in the wrong hands, they can be used incorrectly and be dangerous. If the wrong wavelength is used, for instance, it can destroy the gum tissue. While this technology remains new, the AAP (American Academy of Periodontology) remains cautious about advocating for it. However, as more studies and research come out in favor of using lasers, public opinion may change in its favor. Lasers are a fantastic option for many patients who may otherwise not be good candidates for other treatment for gum disease.
