Inlays & Onlays![]() What Are Inlays and Onlays? Are They the Same Thing? When looking at your different options for fixing your teeth, it is a good idea to have plenty of information. That will help you to make a better decision about your care. Inlays and onlays are both ways to fill small cavities and other imperfections in your teeth. There is one major difference between the two. An inlay will fill a spot that is across the top of the tooth, but it will not go over the cusp. An onlay will go further, and it will cover the cusp of the tooth. Both inlays and onlays are used to fill spaces and correct imperfections where the tooth is still going to be seen. An onlay is not the same thing as a cap or a crown, because it does not cover the entire tooth. Traditional fillings are made out of metal, and they are obvious when you smile. With inlays and onlays, you will not show a smile that is full of metal. Instead, the inlay or the only will be made out of either porcelain or ceramic. It will match the color of your teeth. Your inlay or your onlay will be made ahead of time, and then we will insert it into the hole that is in your tooth. It will then be bonded to the tooth so that it will stay in place. With an inlay, only the hole will be filled. An onlay is a little bit different. It will cover the top of your tooth as well. Unlike a crown, most of your natural tooth will still be seen. Inlays and onlays are meant to last, but things do sometimes happen. If you realize that you have a problem, we will want to see you immediately, so we can figure out the best way to correct it.
