You already know the importance of brushing and flossing your teeth regularly. However, for optimal oral health, regular dental visits are a must. At Watermark Dentistry, we take the health of your mouth seriously and strive to provide you with the best care possible while using the latest dental techniques. With cleanings and exams, we can help you to take proper care of your teeth and gums, ensuring a clean and healthy mouth.
Brushing at least twice a day and flossing once a day is essential to maintaining healthy teeth and gums. However, even if you follow a strict oral hygiene regimen, it is possible to miss certain areas of your mouth, allowing plaque and bacteria to build up, which then still leaves your mouth susceptible to tooth decay and gum disease. You might think your teeth are healthy, but early warning signs of gum disease are easy to miss. In fact, it often goes unnoticed until it has progressed significantly, causing such damage to result in receding gums and bone loss. Moreover, more progressive stages of gum disease requires more invasive treatment.
At Watermark Dentistry, we recommend cleanings at least once every six months. These cleanings are done during your biannual exams and help to prevent further damage that can be caused by oral bacteria, such as cavities, gum disease, and tooth loss. We do this with a variety of specialized tools. Plaque and tartar (hardened plaque that cannot be removed with a toothbrush) are scraped from the surface of your teeth, between your teeth and just below the gum line. After your teeth are scraped clean, we polish them to a brilliant shine.
After your teeth are cleaned, the next portion of your visit is an oral exam. During this exam, we check the overall condition of your mouth, looking for warning signs. These exams can help to point to other health conditions that seemingly have nothing to do with your mouth, such as diabetes and heart disease.
We thoroughly examine your teeth for cavities, chips, cracks or other damage. We also check your gums for signs of gum disease, such as redness, swelling or gum recession. If you have any sealants, fillings or other dental restorations (crowns, veneers, bridges, dentures or implants), we make certain to check on their condition as well. We can do this with state of the art dental equipment, such as digital X-rays and intraoral cameras. Not only does this technology allow us to better monitor the health of your mouth and diagnose issues, but it also allows you to see exactly what we see, so you can better understand your oral health needs. We will also take this time to discuss your oral hygiene habits with you, such as your brushing habits and your lifestyle habits, and answer any questions you might have.
Regular cleanings and exams, in conjunction with daily brushing and flossing, is the best way to keep your mouth, and your whole body, healthy. If it’s time for your dental visit, call Watermark Dentistry today.
