Conditions A Mouthguard Could Help With

Posted on 7/12/2021 by Watermark Dentistry
Conditions A Mouthguard Could Help WithIf you are in a contact sport, you could benefit from a sports mouthguard. Most sports stores have a one size fits all mouthguards for sale. While these are generally inexpensive, they can be highly uncomfortable and irritate your gums. If you are looking for a mouthguard to wear consistently throughout the sports season, consider coming to our office for a custom fit mouthguard.

The mouth guard helps to cushion any blow to the face. This is crucial in sports like rugby, basketball, and football. A mouth guard can minimize the risk of broken teeth and other injuries to face or jaw.

Bruxism and Mouthguards

The other type of mouth guard is called a night guard. A night guard prevents any force from causing damage to the teeth. While you are not at a high risk for getting a ball in the face while you sleep, it is possible to incur some self-inflicted damage. If you are someone who grinds your teeth excessively in your sleep, a night guard can prevent you from wearing down your teeth. It will protect your enamel.

A night guard is essential for patients who have bruxism. This is the act of clenching or grinding your teeth. Most often this is an unconscious movement, and it can occur during the day or night. For most of the population this is not a problem. However, when clenching or grinding of the teeth happens regularly or excessively, the teeth can be damaged and worn down and other health issues can emerge due to bruxism.
