Why Your Breath Smells Like Feces and What to Do

Posted on 3/8/2021 by Watermark Dentistry
Why Your Breath Smells Like Feces and What to DoBad breath is a common problem, but breath that smells like feces is a lot less common. In the case of the latter, even brushing and mouthwash will not help much. Thus, here's an overview of some causes of feces odor on breath and what to do about it.

Poor Oral Hygiene

Perhaps the most common explanation is the simplest one. Poor hygiene can facilitate the build-up of bacteria and plaque between and on your teeth. Failing to floss once a day can also leave food stuck in between your teeth, making your breath smell like feces.

Poor hygiene can also result in gum disease, which can cause bad breath. Thus, it is important that you brush your teeth twice a day and floss at least once. If you wear dentures, you should clean them regularly as well. We can treat gum diseases to reduce the inflammation in your mouth.

Bowel Obstruction

Bowel obstruction, that is, blockage in your large or small intestines, can prevent effective expulsion of feces. Thus, that can cause your breath to smell like feces. Furthermore, the food that's unable to move down your intestinal tract will cause foul-smelling breath. In the case of bowel obstruction, you must seek emergency medical attention right away.

Liver Failure

Liver failure is one of the more extreme causes, but it is a possibility. Liver failure can be acute or chronic. In the case of acute liver failure, patients will need emergency medical attention for treatment. Other symptoms of acute liver failure are a loss of appetite, dehydration, and diarrhea.
