Why Do Some Toothpastes Have Baking Soda In Them?

Posted on 2/6/2023 by Evan
Why Do Some Toothpastes Have Baking Soda In Them?Baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate, is a fine white powder applied in various household uses. Baking soda is a constant ingredient in most kinds of toothpaste. This is because it is a reliable cleaning agent that has numerous benefits for your teeth. On its own, baking soda doesn't protect your teeth against cavities, but it is still considered an excellent cleaning agent. In fact, most toothpastes that contain baking soda have dependable antibacterial properties that protect teeth from decay. Here are reasons why some toothpastes have baking soda in them.

Whitening Teeth

Baking soda contains natural whitening properties that have proven to be effective in whitening your teeth. This is probably the main reason why many toothpastes have it as an ingredient. According to experts, baking soda is a mild abrasive that can remove stains on the outside of your teeth. It is also used in various tooth whitening products.

Reduces Bacteria

Dangerous bacteria will need acidic conditions to survive in your mouth. When you rinse your mouth with baking soda and a water solution, it raises the pH level in your mouth. This creates less acidic conditions that make it hard for infection-causing bacteria to thrive. This is another reason why most toothpastes include baking soda as an ingredient.

Reduces Gingivitis and Plaque

Biofilms are mostly colonies of bacteria that attach themselves to the surface of your teeth. With time, these biofilms will eventually cause oral conditions like cavities and gingivitis. One example of biofilm is plaque that builds up on your teeth. Baking soda contains properties that are hostile to the existence of such bacteria. Using toothpaste that contains baking soda will go a long way in eliminating plaque and other harmful bacteria that could cause infections.
